because we are free from sin; we serve him because he forgives sin. Here we are face to face with the gospel. God is holy, and he demands that we be holy to enter heaven. Left to ourselves, there is no way we can meet that demand. God demands a garment of perfect righteousness, and we, like Joshua, stand before him in the filthy garments of sin! And Satan gleefully accuses us! How is it possible for filthy sinners ever to stand acceptably in the presence of the holy God? We have no righteousness
